DIY: Pulling Blocks On A Budget

Posted on Posted in Olympic Weightlifting

A full set of pulling/jerk blocks can be a big undertaking. Though, in some cases, you might be limited by space — not necessarily by time or budget. For those of us who are limited on space, here is a quick and easy alternative using those popular Rogue High-Temp bumper plates — or any other brand of bumpers that you might have in your gym or CrossFit box.

All you need is 2″ PVC pipe which you can pick up at any local hardware store like Lowe’s or Home Depot. We’re going to stack up the bumpers to whatever height is necessary (low hang, mid-hang, etc.) and hold them together using the PVC pipe. The only thing you need to make sure of is that the PVC is at least half an inch below the top of the inner collar of the weights. This will prevent the plates that you are lifting with from getting damaged by the edge of the pipe.

For me, I use three 45’s and a 25 on each side and that puts the bar right above my knee. You’ll have to experiment with the height of the blocks relative to your body type, but these “blocks” will hold up to virtually any weight that you throw at it — happy lifting!
